In many Asian countries and cultures, including China, "8" is considered to be the lucky number. Check the yellow pages and you will see that the phone numbers of many Chinese businesses, such as restaurants, include as many "8's" as possible.

This week I have noticed two photos of "8" numbered diesels in the regional forums: CP #8888 and CSX #888. To keep our lucky streak alive, I'll post a photo of Amtrak #88 heading up the Seattle bound Empire Builder (Amtrak #7) that I took on Saturday (10/27). I believe somewhere in my MP 18 thread is a photo of Amtrak diesel #8 heading up Amtrak train #8, the Chicago bound Empire Builder.

I invite others to post photos of "8" numbered diesels. To qualify, the number of the diesel must consist entirely of "8's": 8, 88, 888, 8888, etc.

Thanks for the photos.

Conversely, "4" is the unlucky number in many Asian cultures. I will need all of the good luck these "8" numbered engines can bring me as BNSF #4444 went past me around noon today (10/30) at MP 18.

More Bad Luck?

Hope this doesn't compound your back luck, Bill. At Steilacoom in 2010.

On Thursday (11/1), Amtrak engine #88 was the trailing unit leaving Seattle on Amtrak train #8, the Chicago bound Empire Builder.

Double bad luck today (11/14). The Seattle bound Empire Builder (Amtrak #7) was led by engine #4 and parked adjacent to marker #4 at the Edmonds station stop.
