A signal outage on the Steel Bridge today forced a southbound UP transfer to stop at Portland Union Station for two hours, fouling not only three grade crossings (NW 9th, 15th and 17th Avenues), but also the crossovers at CP 0.5. This blocked the departure of the northbound Cascades No. 506.

During the delay #506 pulled its head end right up to the NW 9th Avenue grade crossing, lest a pedestrian or bicyclist be tempted to slip between cars of the stopped freight.

Finally the UP freight backed a mile north to clear the crossovers. ATK 506 departed at 1:13 PM, an hour late:

(At left in the above photo are two Empire Builder Portland section trainsets patiently waiting for flooded tracks in the Midwest to be cleared.)

The UP freight waited just north of NW 17th Avenue until it was cleared to resume its southbound journey past Union Station and across Steel Bridge.
