Operative question about Amtrak crew

Given that the conductor is traveling in cars with passengers. The engineer in the locomotive traveling alone or accompanying someone as well as a second conductor?

On runs less than 6 hours one engineer is up front and two conductors are back in the train. For runs over 6 hours you have two engineers and also two conductors. The conductors usually ride back in the passenger cars unless either one in needed to line track switches. In that case a conductor may ride a short distance in the locomotive cab.

Or you could be VIA and have 2 engineers and a Service Manager. The #2 engineer does all the 'conductor' work outside.

I don't understand why we continue to carry this ancient workmethod. There should be an operation conductor in the cab with the engineer, and a NON-conductor who handles the revenue AND passenger crew discipline. However, these are strong unions, and they will never do what is 'logical'.
