On Amtrak, I can't see southern Arizona in the daylight!

Railroadforums.com is a free online Railroad Discussion Forum and Railroad Photo Gallery for railroaders, railfans, model railroaders and anyone else who is interested in railroads. We cover a wide variety of topics, including freight trains, passenger and commuter railroads, rail news and information, tourist railroads, railway museums and railroad history.

I downloaded the Amtrak timetables for the Sunset Limited and the Texas Eagle (both have the exact same schedule thru AZ). My intent was to take an out-and-back one or two day trip from Tucson, basically to see southern AZ. But the train(s) leave eastbound at 1:26 AM and westbound at 11:30 PM. Oh well. :) But I think I'm gonna do it anyhow . . . .

I know! I can hope for a breakdown or that the train is extremely late.

The schedule for the Sunset Ltd. is changing in a few weeks with more favorable times into Tucson.

Thanks for the info. I'll watch for the changes.

ETA . . .

I looked and found that the schedule will change on May 7th. New eastbound departure is 8:15 AM and new westbound departure is 7:35 PM. The new eastbound departure time is GREAT!!!

What's to see?

(j/k)
If you're not a desert rat like me, probably nothing. I just watched a Pentrex DVD about the SOO Railroad on the upper Mississippi River and that was deemed worthy of 60 mins.

The only think worse would be footage of trains around Houston!!! ;)

it would be a slow trip......lots of trains. but you would see something we call trees.
Ha. Ha. Yeah, everywhere a cow craps, a mesquite tree grows. :) Hey, isn't Houston where people go to the levee to get a view of the countryside? :)

I've driven from Texarkana to El Paso -- had to. That was a LONG day.

In southern AZ there is Texas Canyon. Not sure how closely the UP tracks are to I-10 but they may be close enough to see the canyon:
