Railroad crossing-arms blocked traffic at least four intersections in the heart of Fort Collins on Thursday morning due to the snowy weather.

Mason Street corridor crossings including Prospect Road, Horsetooth Road and Laurel Street, as well as the crossing at Prospect Road and Timberline Road, were blocked by malfunctioning arms, according to Fort Collins Police Services.

A BNSF Railway Company spokesman said salt laid on the roads had a side effect of shorting out equipment at the crossings, where it mixed with water and caused the arms to drop.

Joe Faust with BNSF said the company intends to work more closely with the city to avoid such traffic disruptions.
