I'm researching the roundhouse and yard that the Rock Island RR built in Herington, Kansas in the 1880s. Any photographs of the buildings going up or in use would be greatly appreciated. Original pictures of the stone freight and passenger depot are hard to find as well. BTW, the depot was demolished years ago, literally overnight by the Rock Island RR to prevent it from being designated a Historic Landmark. All the records stored there were destroyed too. The Rock Island never lived that one down!
From and earlier posting, I'm still looking for regulations for shipping a deceased person from Herington KS for burial in western Virginia in 1886. My interest is what hoops one had to go through as this was done with a relative of mine at the time. I'm sure the RRs had regulations and policies to get this done since shipping the fallen home during the civil war become possible with the advent of embalming. I haven't found any RR records on if there were any differences with just paying the common freight rates to get it done. Any help would be appreciated.
