On the old MoPac line today, I was railfanning in St. Joseph, and caught an interesting sight: A UP manifest being led by a grey KCS engine, with a safety cab. We are in Illinois, so the KCS runs through the area, but we are a couple hundred miles away from KCS trackage. Seeing a KCS engine is one thing, but having it lead a train is really interesting.

Anybody see this, or know why UP would let a KCS lead their train when their are 2 other UP locos trailing?

Happens all the time. Power may have come in on a run through, or they may have worked on it at the roundhouse. I've seen every Class I lead UP trains in CA. NS, CSX, CN, CP, BNSF, KCS. It typically all works out in the end with HP Hours. If one carrier owes another HP hours in the end, instead of paying them, they typically hand over a locomotive and even it out.

Also once an inspection is due on a locomotive, it is done at the terminal it is at, no matter who's it is. There are set AAR rates for all of this type of work.

Too much BNSF orangeade
Yeah I have seen a few trains with that kind of mixture. I caught a KCS unit leading a BNSF freight in SoCal last fall...here's the vid:
