Kalama, Washington---One Of My Favorite Railfan Spots

I love railfanning in Kalama. The BNSF double track mainline parallels the Columbia River, and is across from a well maintained city park. There's a pedestrian bridge that goes over the two mains and provides an excellent photo spot for NB and SB traffic. Not only that, but there's plenty of BNSF, UP and Amtrak action.

Restaurants, gas and motels nearby as well. On a warm, sunny day, this is easily one of the "most excellent" railfan sites in the western side of the state. If you haven't been there, try it out, and see if you too don't agree. I live in Salem and drive up to Kalama on a regular basis. I hardly ever see other railfans there.

We used to stay in the Port District's RV park. It was very spartan, we never used the restroom, but it had hookups. Just a two lane road separated you from the double track main. The night wake ups were something else. With the river on the other side, it was a lot of fun. But alas, I've been told it is closed.

I gotta totally agree with you on that. Quite a few of my videos have been shot from the tracks in Kalama. Whenever I have a chance its one of my first choices for action. The Burger Basket across the freeway has excellent food as well.

Not a whole of scenery at Kalama if I recall correctly. Pyramid Brewing used to be there once a long time ago.
