That is sad to hear, I own several of his books on the Milwaukee Road and Burlington Northern.
BIG loss
Bad news. Hope he did not suffer long and passed with dignity before joining the Big Train Up There.
He was among the giants in our industry publication world.
Hope he's Up There shaking hands with DP Morgan, Phil Hastings, et all....

That is when a memorial service is scheduled on the east coast of the USA.

What a loss to our community!
Sorry to hear this i will miss him in R&R.
I was surprised to hear this when if was first announced last week. Jim was only 69 and I thought he was in pretty good health. I haven't heard the specifics - it will probably be in the next R&R. I first met Jim when I was at an operating session on Allen McClellan's Virginia & Ohio layout in Dayton Ohio. A very nice guy with tons of stories. Jim liked to share his experiences and was a very genuine and likable person. I ran into him again in Ellensburg Washington following an excursion of SP&S 700 and GW #51. He had his trusty Nikons and was soaking up the steam. His contribution to our community is great and he will be sorely missed.

He had a by-pass a few years ago. Never one who was the statue of good fitness or eating habits.. steak and shake and Cincy chilli ( what railfans are). Perhaps he might have changed his ways in eating after the by-pass?
