Is Train GPS data publicly available?

I was curious if this data is accessible to the public so a person could determine where a train is located and if a particular traffic route will have a train.

I have a family friend whose in management with a local Class III and he once showed me the site he uses to track certain locomotives. I guess I wasn't supposed to see it. :D

He also told a story of one day one of the GPS device they use kept moving around and he couldn't figure out why. Then it dawned on him he kept moving it around the office.
