I have what appears to be the inventor's model of a railroad switch that was patented in 1905 under US798515A. I imagine that the inventor, Henry La Flame, used this to demonstrate his invention to railroad companies (models were not required for the patent at this time).

Basically, the train engine would engage the post on the right and cause it to turn one quarter. This would direct the switch to a sideling as well as reorient the post on the left. The caboose would then engage the post on the left, which would reset the switch and opposite post to the starting position. There all multiple other features of this model as described in the patent

Some questions for the group

  • -Does anyone know if such a switch was produced at full-scale?
  • Should I fix it to make it functional? Basically, I'd need to take some of it apart and replace the string that runs through the switch and connects the post.
  • Would you like to see a video of how it works?
  • This post has been rejected by three railroad history groups. I can't figure out why

Very cool! It is likely the inventor was affiliated with a RR somehow, if you have a clue as to which one, check with their historical society. Other local area museums would also be potential contacts. It fits in fine here, but sadly it is a fairly low traffic site.

Is this something you found, or does your family have ties?
