Slides have closed U.S. 2 over both Stevens Pass and in the Tumwater Canyon outside of Leavenworth, WA. There's still access to the upper valley, but there's some concern that the Chumstick Highway will flood. If that happens, what would happen to a crew that goes dead on time at, say, Merrit or the School Crossing in Winton? Would they be allowed to moved their train to the next place that has access, or would they have to stay with their train? Seems like a lousy place to take rest.

A hi-rail could be sent in to get them, or if all else the crew could be ordered to take the train or light power out. It has to be a pretty good emergency to have a crew excedee there 12 hours but it can be done.

Hopefully they wouldn't go dead on the law on single track, that just makes for a mess. If it is double track, another train could come and pick up the crew.

And it is very rare that a train crew will violate the HOS Law.

I've also seem them run light power out of Wenatchee to dog-catch a crew at Merritt during a fairly big snow storm (18" in 12 hours).

Guess that's the nice thing about having your own road.
