Wondering how far south the North American rail network goes. Does it continue past Mexico?

In essence, how low can you go? :p

There is a transfer connection with the Guatemalan 3' gauge rail network at the Guatemala-Mexico border; it's lain dormant since rail operations in Guatemala were abandoned in 2007 and the entire network has been dismantled by metal thieves. There never has been any real sort of a railway network connecting all of Central America; the closest anyone had come was United Fruit Company's International Railways of Central America (IRCA), but that network only got as far south as El Salvador and never crossed into Nicaragua or Honduras. There was a proposal floated in 2005 to build a standard gauge rail line connecting Mexico with all of Central America and eventually connecting with the Panama Canal Railway, but talks on the matter came to nothing (no surprise, given that only two or three of the participating countries have operating railroad lines, and the rest are in no financial condition to maintain or resume rail operations on their existing lines, much less participate in the building and operation of a new one - even with outside financial support, and none of those countries have allowed private operations for several years - or at least allowed private operation without substantial government involvement or interference).
