I'm not talking about the loco numbers, I am curious how some of you get the manifest train number? Is there a special website available? Or is it simply you have an "in" with a RR employee who provides you with the info?.

I have seen the manifest train numbers in numerous train magazine articles. I suppose the writer got the information from the railroad. But is there a way for the average railfan to get this information?

There are many ways to find out. Some users had created websites that list train symbols for a variety of railroads. Then others (like myself most of the time) simply listen in on their scanners to hear which train is which.

The only train numbers I hear are usually the loco #s, not the train-manifest numbers.

Obviously it's going to depend on the railroad. Out this way, CSX and NS call the train symbols first, followed by the # of the lead loco.

You can also post here what the train is carrying, where it's running through and what time it does. Chances are, someone around here might know what the symbol is.

What is your malfunction?
If you want more specific details on the train symbols, etc, be friends with some trainmen or railroaders.
