Has anyone seen grade crossing signals with red lens projecting ~6 inches out from the lamp housing?

On South Dorcas Street in Lewistown, PA in the 1960's I saw red squarish glass lens protruding from the two south-facing (o)T(o) .
They started out as 8-1/4 inch round from the signal head but became retangular-shaped at the end, I think.

An unpaved lane along side the tracks Teed into S Dorcas Street from the east at the grade crossing.
The glass lens projected out so one on the cinder drive could see the lamps flashing from 90º.
Any others?
As a child I did not like the bug-eyed signal. The ends were more square than portrayed here: (=)T(=)
Thank you.
