151 years ago today, the Transcontinental Railroad was completed.

Last year, the 150th, was marked by huge celebrations and a system tour with the newly restored Union Pacific Big Boy.

This year? No events I’ve heard of, and the steam team is on the bench for the season.

I went out to Promontory for 125th. Doesn’t seem that long ago. I even remember the 100th In Omaha. If I live as long as my mother I’ll see the 175th. Oh yeah Happy Mother’s Day too.

I remember the 100th anniversary back in 1969. The UP named the recently introduced DD40X as "Centennial Units" and numbered them in the 6900 series.
