I'm already working on a map that I hope will show all abandoned railroad lines in Western Washington (minus temporary logging lines). If everyone does a mpa for their area, we could end up with a pretty comprehensive railroad map database.
Google Map Maker is a new product that Google has put out. It allows us the users to edit Google Maps. i just went to the Google Geo Users Summit, where we discussed this product and how to make it better.
Right now the focus is making sure the present day is accurate. They may put a history version of this together so that we all may see the history.
