Last saturday I visit Halberstadt, a small town in the north from the Harz. Halberstadt have a 10miles long tram net with two lines. On regular service (Monday to Friday) five trams are needed. Halberstadt has five trams of type "Leoliner". On saturday were needed three trams and on sunday two trams. Is a "Leoliner" defectiv historical trams must help out. Normally it is one of three GT4. Very interesting Eric. I really enjoy your pictures. It's a beautiful part of the world. I wish the USA would invest in some of trams but we are too attatched to our automobiles.

Thank you for your comment! But in West Germany many trams were closed arround 1960 and 1970. In East Germany survived many trams, because the people had to wait a long time for a car. Since I do not live in the U.S., I know the policy only from the news. The fact is, in the traffic policy in the U.S. have to rethink.

Thank you for the photos of Halberstadt. It looks like a quiet, peaceful place.
The number 4 and 168 trams look very nice.
Do you have a better photo of the crossing in the last photo? It looks very unusual.

Halberstadt is not so peaceful. Some residents are negative attitude towards the Western world. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, unemployment rose considerably. The industry was simply out of date. Many residents are very frustrated. But also the German policy and EU policies have contributed to the decline of the industry.

I have no better photo from this crossing, but I found a video from this crossing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENn5tdqufYk

The crossing is a typical GDR-deisgn. Are you looking for more pictures of the design? Search at google under: "WSSB Bahnübergänge"
