I am new to this site so I apologize if this is in the wrong forum/thread.
I found this old black and white picture of a bullet nose locomotive but cannot locate any markings to determine its make/model. It looks like a 4-6-4 and I have seen some photos of the late 30's trains from the NYC 20th century limited that look similar. Does anyone know what this model was. I'm guessing it was from the late 30's to early 40's. Thanks for any responses.
Pat's right - one of the five pacifics streamlined for the Black Diamond and designed by Otto Kuhler. Looks like this one hasn't been painted in a while. Any idea what year this was taken?
I'm not sure when the photo was taken. I found it at a garage sale and being a train buff had to have it especially since it was unmarked. Thank you for the reponses. It's nice to know it was a Pennsylvania based train.
Thanks for your responses Pat an Jon
It could be from during WW2 up to early 1948 just before the PA-1s took over passenger hauling duties; LV removed all of the chrome (except, apparently for the front handrails) and repainted these locomotives in a plain black scheme with a simple red stripe (which is probably covered in grime, unless this loco never got one or "lost" the stripe after a later repainting) during the war. A troop train or mail extra, perhaps?
