so soon I may be a conductor, hired on as a student conductor first. but my question is, what type of bag or pack would you recommend as a conductor to use
military surplus or other?

These two super-durable brands are popular among railroaders: http://www.redoxx.com/ and http://www.autumncreek.com/ . Whatever you get, pay the extra money and get something high quality. It will be worth it in the long run. Red Oxx makes a bag specifically for railroaders, but you have to type in "railroad" in their search box to find it: http://www.redoxx.com/Rail-Yard-Junction/Railroad-Grip/91003/10192/Product It's a little too big, in my opinion, to squeeze in and out of locomotive doors. Same with their railroad backpack, which looks big enough to live inside of: http://www.redoxx.com/Featured-Items/Rail-King-Railroad-Rucksack/92021/0/Product Me, personally, I used the Red Oxx airline carry-on size bag. I've had it since 2007 and it's holding up very well. One zipper pull broke off a few months ago, but I have yet to do anything about it. Red Oxx will replace it for free, but I need to send it back to them. I don't know much about the Autumn Creek brand, but I was told the company was started by an ex-railroad employee. I do know from experience that a cheap bag or backpack will fall apart very quickly! By the way, since you need to use the bag or backpack on the job, it's a tax write off.
