I'm in Manitoba and looking at applying for conductor.
How do overnight shifts work? Say I'm gone out of town and spend the night somewhere. Is there any type of compensation to spend the night somewhere? I guess it doesn't count as work hours does it?

So say you go on a 8 hour trip, spend the night somewhere, and come home for 8 hours. You'd only get paid for 16 hours? Is that why they say it's hard on families? Because you're away and it's not counting towards your hours?

No, you are not paid for the time you are at the away from home terminal UNLESS you are there more than 11 hrs. After 11 hrs "Held Away" pay starts and you are on pay until your on duty time starts for your return trip.

That isn't what drives families apart, it's the constantly being on call and having to drop everything and leave at a moment's notice. Missing the birth of your children, anniversaries and birthdays and never being able to make any plans in advance because you have to live attached to your cell phone with no days off or clue of when you will be going to work. I almost missed my own wedding!
