A friend who works for an aerial surveying company in Sacramento was going through company archives when he ran across an aerial photo of a City of SF derailment at Fulda, near Emigrant Gap on the Donner line. We're trying to determine when this was. The ground is clear with just a few small patches of snow visible. The power was Alco PAs running A-A-B-A. The two SP head-end cars are on their sides, and the first 3 or 4 cars of the train are daisy-chained across the tracks. The site is at the Fulda balloon track. The units appear to be in "Bloody Nose" rather than "Daylight" paint. Anyone have any info on when this might have occurred?

In that photo, the baggage car is clearly marked UP. Hummmm.

It was a joint C&NW, SP, and UP train. Most photos show UP cars, like this:

I have never heard of this wreck but there is a fascinating book on the wreck of the City of San Francisco that happened in Nevada. Someone sabotaged the rail and there were a huge derailment. The name of the book is-Tragic Train "The City of San Francisco": The Development and Historic Wreck of a Streamliner

Tragic Train

Tragic Train is one of the biggest jokes of all time in Railfan publishing. Very little truth inside the book outside of the photos of the derailment and a few on hand reports from the scene.
