Stopped at these spots while on our way to NJ two weeks ago tomorrow and Thursday. The first two shots were at the Cassandra Overlook. The remainder are from Horseshoe Curve where the weather didn't cooperate. Note the wb ballast train had a few Amtrak cars in the consist.

Interesting. Some of those conversions with repainting into the colorful paint schemes are three years old, but those are the first photos I have seen of them.

I guess once you tune up the rest of the locomotive and you need to get some additional efficiency out of the system, go to AC... I'm kind of surprised this wasn't done a long time ago... I'll bet someone came up with a conversion "kit" kind of thing to do this, that's a fair amount of work I would think, but maybe it has a good ROI? Nice photos and the new colors are pretty wild I might add, but I kind of like them too. Maybe I'll get to see one out this way sometime? For the last several years, I haven't even seen a train at a crossing..:( The either went by or haven't got there yet.

Norfolk Southern predecessor road Norfolk & Western built its own steam locomotives, so you could say there is precedence for the NS to do some heavy duty rebuilding to its diesel locomotive fleet.

Those flashy paint schemes are quite a contrast to the conservative, somber paint schemes of the old Southern and Norfolk & Western railroads as well as the current NS.
