Cass Scenic RR debuts freshly painted C&O Caboose!

Railroadforums.com is a free online Railroad Discussion Forum and Railroad Photo Gallery for railroaders, railfans, model railroaders and anyone else who is interested in railroads. We cover a wide variety of topics, including freight trains, passenger and commuter railroads, rail news and information, tourist railroads, railway museums and railroad history.

We are excited to announce that Cass Scenic Railroad caboose No. 50 has been returned to its original late 1950’s Chesapeake & Ohio livery! The yellow painting and simplified lettering was adopted by the C&O for all its cabooses in 1956. This K3-3 class caboose was built by Standard Steel Car Co. of Hammond, Ind for the C&O in November 1924. It was last used in work train service on the Hinton Division, and sold to the State of West Virginia for use at Cass in November 1966.

Many similar C&O cabooses could be seen on the rear of freight trains as they rolled through Cass during the first decade of Cass Scenic Railroad excursions.

Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad partnered with Clifton Forge, Virginia-based Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society for this project. The society provided drawings and other important details from start to finish. We are looking forward to working with them on many other exciting projects this year and beyond!

Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad would like to recognize local Pocahontas County artisan Eric Werner for painting all lettering by hand and without stencils, DGVR’s Billy Cassell and the entire DGVR track crew who, prepped and painted the car.

It really is! That's such a great looking train too. A nice regular looking freight train. Once those boxcars were everywhere, but now pretty much gone. Nice to see them saved.

The really cool part is that we have seven identical boxcars! Will be a great sight once all are painted.

Perfect! That's exactly what's needed. There's a junkyard in Great Falls, MT with walls made of classic boxcars. When I win the lottery (I'd have to play first), I'm gonna buy them all, put trucks under them and then haul them behind one of the NKP Berkshires.
