Can you tell me what this is?

Railroadforums.com is a free online Railroad Discussion Forum and Railroad Photo Gallery for railroaders, railfans, model railroaders and anyone else who is interested in railroads. We cover a wide variety of topics, including freight trains, passenger and commuter railroads, rail news and information, tourist railroads, railway museums and railroad history.

I'm completely new to this forum and I hope that this is the appropriate sub-forum for this. I found a piece of equipment that I believe to be associated with a railroad but I'm honestly not sure. I tend to believe this because I found it buried next to a train track while photographing an oncoming train. Does anyone know what this is and what it was used for?

Thanks,

Chris

Thanks Bruce, for the reply and the link. Makes perfect sense now seeing as that the majority of the cars on the train I photographed had containers on them. Do they just fall off sometimes? I can't imagine one being unlocked where we were at, in the middle of nowhere.

They can't come out when between two containers. One could have been left unlocked on top of a container, or someone dropped it on a car and didn't bother to get it, and it eventually fell off.

Quite often those are left on the walkways on the ends of intermodal cars, so I'm not surprised that you found one along the right of way. That's an example of why you never want to stand close to the tracks while a train is passing by. You never know what might fall off a passing railroad car.

I was just kidding... But your slogan is somewhat questionable as it insinuates that veterans are suckers. That's the way it reads to me, anyway.. Or, do you mean, if they're forced to serve ? Or, do you mean it from the hip; that they voluntarily write that check saying: "Here I am. I'll do what you wish me to do for my country". ?

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

No need to worry about explaining it to MHinLA, he won't be around to read the replies. Not in the mood for sarcastic jerks today, so he has left the building.
