Saw these in Kansas and I thought grain elevators. Looking more closely seems an odd structure for that. Anyone know what these are?

Looks like a grain elevator to me. Were you standing on an abandoned siding or right of way when you took the photo?
 
Agree, it appears to be an old/small grain elevator.

What strikes you as odd about it?
 
Grain elevator. Many in small towns on the plains of both U.S. and Canada. Train Time makes a nice wood model of this style. Looks like you are on a railroad right of way minus track. Location? Model needs to finished.
