just a suggestion;
as it turns out, there is a scanner app which detects hundreds of frequencies. the app is called "emergency radio free" for apple products and its free. i found that it picks up Baltimore area trains, fire dept, police, etc, and it probably picks up other railroads as well elsewhere. id suggest trying that app if you arent willing to buy a scanner, but still want one.
