Hominid Pinkage

I've always been casually interested in trains, chiefly as a preferred means of ground transportation when feasible, although I've never been truly "into it'. I've never gone spotting and I don't build models. But I am interested in the politics of railroading as well as the engineering involved in the planning and building of systems--routing, deciding where to put stations, grade decisions, and so on.
I'm in West L.A. just a shot drive from the current western terminus of the new Expo Line, and in about a month when Culver City Station opens, it'll be a 20 minute bus ride.
It's a good time to be in L.A. if you like railroads; with local Amtrak and Metrolink together it would be possible to simply show up at a random time, on a weekday, and be able to board a train in either direction without having to wait too long.
I assume that we're allowed to post off-topic in the Club Car, and I'd like to share my viewing of the recent solar eclipse. (Somebody please stop me if that's not allowed!) However, I do also want to talk about railroads, and read what others have to say here.
In case anyone wonders about my screen name, Hominid reflects my abiding interest in human evolution and primate taxonomy, and Pinkage comes from a story arc in the Get Fuzzy comic strip, where Bucky the talking cat calls his owner Rob "Pinkish", referring to his skin tone. (I think he should have written it "Pinkage", but it wasn't my call.)
