Sometimes you just have to grin. Last night on my way home, as I was passing under the UP Sedalia Sub in Lee's Summit I saw the UP coal train to Montrose, MO going eastbound (southbound). Saying to myself, that I would most likely see it on the return trip sometime the next day. Sure enough, as I was going to work, and passed under the same bridge, guess who roll over -- that's right, the same train, this time heading back to the coal mine. It was just one of those things. Most of the coal drags that come through are generally westbound. The Sedalia Sub runs between KC and STL, and therefore runs east/west, however from Kansas City to Pleasant Hill, it runs in a north/south direction, and this section is the ruling grade in the area. For this train, they come up the Sedalia, to P-Hill (Pleasant Hill) to the Carthage Wye, and then turn south down the MNA's (ex KATY) Carthage Sub to Nevada, MO. They then switchback it all the way up to Montrose, where they switchback it again, and then balloon it, and then reverse direction.
It was just kind of "funny" that I saw -- and went under -- the same train coming and going, and about 14 hours.
