Yesterday, 8/8/2012, SD45 NIWX 8924 made its last run on the Eastern Washington Gateway RR, a one-way trip from Cheney WA to locomotive dealer Western Rail in Airway Heights WA. 8924 was the last of the 3 SD45s that EWG began operations with 5 years ago, and the only one still serviceable.

In grand style, 8924 made her last run on the point of a short train of 4 steel loads for the Geiger spur, with GP7 1617 bringing up the rear. There was a practical side to all of this as it eliminated a runaround move on the spur and a one-way light engine move back to Cheney.

1) 8924 has been started and moved onto the mainline while the train is made up.

2) ready for departure from Cheney with 4 steel loads and GP7 1617 bringing up the rear.

3) A brief stop on the Geiger spur at the Elizabeth siding.

4) Behind the fence at Western Rail

This was a sad occasion for me as I have run 8924 many miles over the last several years. It has always been very reliable and POWERFUL. We believe that MRL had tweeked it up to about 4200 hp!

If anyone wants to purchase a good, operable, blue carded SD45, they should contact dealer Western Rail IMMEDIATELY!

Here's a photo of her with the 1617 in Cheney. The 1617 was having starting issues - notice the engineer climbing the long hood?

Sorry to see another old workhorse put out to pasture. It probably won't see anymore action with the abundance of SD40-2's on the market.
