Just saw this on Facebook.
Save the date! The Friends of 4449 are in the final stages of coordinating with Amtrak and BNSF to run two round-trips up the Columbia Gorge this summer. We plan to run between Portland, OR and Wishram, WA with a stop in Vancouver, WA on Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3, 2011. Tickets and more information regarding the trips will be available soon at 4449.com
Now here's something worth saving my pennies for!

It's going to be a great trip! I hope it will sell out, these are important trips for the future of the 4449 and all of ORHF.
Now here's something worth saving my pennies for!
Approximately how many pennies would be needed?
Bruce
I don't know,i'd like to know.So as to start planning but,i'm not going to get my hopes up till it's set in stone,I'm guessing BNSF, has the final word on this. And as with other trip annoucement (non 4449) there's been disappointments.I do have to give them credit though, and the 4449 crew if anybody can make steam excursions happen,to their geat credit, it's these guys......It looks to be about a 100mi+. About a 4 hr rountrip excursion, give or take some time, but it should look good going around the wye at Wishram and else where.
Wow, what a surprise! And only yesterday I got the NRHS news which suggested a 4449 trip over the pass for the convention the month before.

Keep an eye on the 4449.com website for "how many pennies" you need! Hopefully you won't be like the old lady at the store, because it may take a while....lol
Always wanted to take a trip behind #4449! ... Hopefully details come out soon!
I see they put the Wishram, (July 2)trip up on there web site, but not a whole lot more info.
Be nice to see SP&S 700 go along too!

Anyone know the status of her?
700 is in need of work and not in any condition to run at the moment. The 4449 trips are however in the works, all I can tell you is it's going to be a Awsome trip!

Is there something you know that we don't??
Nothing posted on 4449.com yet..

The ticket prices can't be final until the contracts are signed. However we have been heard to say that there will be three classes of service -- Coach, Lounge and Dome. Coach will be less than $200 (and we don't mean 199.95), Lounge will be a little over $200 and dome seats will be getting close to $300. Fare will include hot lunch in Wishram.

I can't help but wonder how ridership will be affected from the NRHS convention this year as well. Many people wouldn't thrown down a few Ben Franklins
twice in one summer to ride behind the same power. I sure hope I'm wrong about that, though.
The NRHS event will have some impact I'm sure, but probably not a huge amount. The Wishram trips are out of Portland. The NRHS trips are out of Tacoma.
Sure, some folks will go to both locations, but there are plenty of train fans in Portland who won't be attending the NRHS convention.
Dome and club class for Stampede have already sold out, which is predictable since it's steam and rare mileage.
Hopefully there will be enough interest to support these runs. I wish they'd go to Bend again, but I suspect that doing the two Wishram trips instead was a better choice, since they can be priced lower and they don't require a hotel stay and two day commitment. So I think they made the smart choice considering the economy.
Drewster, what's wrong with the 700? I've been wondering why we haven't seen more of her the last couple years.
Haven't seen any mention of these trips so far. The ticket ordering site had coach and dome sold out. Did anyone from this forum go? I took a week off work and my wife decided I'd had enough train chasing for a while, so I didn't go...
Here are some snaps as the Special rolled through Avery this morning.
heh, Heh . . . These guys were really moving. Note the blurriness of the front of 4449 in the 4th. picture. Relative to the camera, the rate of change of that part of the locomotive was MUCH greater than the rest of it. This photo was snapped at 1/640 of a second.
A couple of the "caboose".
