A posting on a popular pay-to-be-told-your-stupid forum indicated BNSF was running 2 n/b and 2 s/b trains down the OT and Gateway subs, they have strange symbols are destined for points east.

any idea on the symbols and the reason for the detours? can this be due to the north dakota flooding? i thought those reroutes were taking place over the MRL.

The Oregon Trunk detours are indeed due to the flooding in North Dakota. Unit coal, grain, and intermodal trains are going via the MRL that I know of. The detours we've had so far have been manifest trains. I don't know the symbols as trains are always called out by the lead locomotive number here.

Just read on the pay site that there might be a unit grain heading to Kalama WA that will be detouring our way. That train is already out of Amarillo.

Here's a link to the Trainorders thread on this subject.

it does seem that in some locales, the dispatcher/yardmaster tends to use only the lead unit number on the radio, while in others, they use the symbol and sometimes are very exact about the symbol. i havent been able to figure out if it is a policy that varies for some reason or if it is just personal preference on the part of the people on the microphone.

I shot a couple on the Trunk Sunday - regular Trunk trains PASBAR and BAKPAS. Didn't hear about any more than the two I shot and nothing about any detours.

Any more of these unit grainers set to run? I will be in Bend next weekend and was thinking if taking a trip up to S Jct or Paxton, it would be great to see one of these beasts climbing the hill. Any other detour traffic out there?

Oregon Trunk detour traffic..

I know that there are two different symboled grain trains to Kalama, Washington coming up.. A G-BARKAL9-29A (Barstow, CA to Kalama, WA) came into Bend this afternoon.. There was a G-NYFKAL9-23A that came into Wishram yesterday around noon-time.. Another G-NYFKAL is on the lineup sometime late this week. There are going to be a few more Canola meal covered hopper trains in the next few days to week..

Also, BNSF is looking at opening up the Hi-Line through Minot, ND as early as Tuesday/Wednesday.. I would imagine that the MOW will have its work cut out for them to open the line to all the trains it normally handles for a while.. Also have to have the crews back from there "detour" home terminals to work out of Minot.. :D
