Hello,

Attached is a photo of the stone abutments of a railroad culvert from about 1855, the span of the bridge structure would have been about 12 feet. I would like to lead a project to clean up this area and reconstruct the bridge structure and a section of track for a public historical site.

My question: Does anyone know how this bridge might have been constructed in 1855? What were the prevailing best practices for this sort of bridge (materials, design, etc)? Perhaps there are photos of existing culvert bridges from this era? Does anyone know of a good reference book that might give me insight?

I want to be as historically accurate as possible. This rail line was never completed and track was never laid, but the road was graded and these culvert bridges were started. But I want to build a bridge structure and a section of track as it might have been.

Thanks
