On Good Friday, a westbound loaded grain train travels along Puget Sound south of Edmonds. As the mid-train DPUs pass the camera, the head end is at MP16. It's hard to see, but on the far right edge of the photo is the U-ROOEVE waiting to go noth.
BNSF #6602 is the rear DPU on a Inside Gateway Trunk train. This was the 1st test run with the GE test car right behind the two lead C4's... This was my 1st attempt at catching these second trip to the BNSF Fallbridge Subdivision..
Two ES44DC's shove on the rear of a 100 + car grain train Westbound through Goodnoe, WA about 15 minutes before the sun rose enough to come over the hills.
CN 346 passes with his usual mixture of Sulphur tanks and Lumber products. I love the 346! CN 2406 trails, who would come back to haunt me on Halloween! The 346 doesn't have DPUs so very much anymore...
The desert brush provides fall colors as UP 5403 (DPU) follows a heavy manifest train down Cajon Pass on the Palmdale Cutoff just below CP Silverwood.
This train is bound for West Colton, California.
Image captured on Oct 18th 2008, which was a beautiful autumn day.
Someones misusing DPU capability LOL. Half the train is in the tow, the other half will be lifted down the line to form a typical '1+2' potash train, i.e.:
Engine/62 hoppers/2 Engines/62 hoppers (119-125 hoppers in total)
Normally this is done by two AC4400CW's up front (1 unit waiting @...
After just 10 years of service the decaling is already faltering If UP takes over CP I cant see the power scene changing much, already UP & CEFX SD90MACs everywhere!

It's a fact of life on the CP of today. Most every Intermodal traversing the Swift Current sub has a DPU of some sort. Some trains have their second unit cut in mid-train. CP 8837 is shoving on the rear of an Eastbound near Swift Current.
As usual, the 115 comes in as the best catch of the night. Despite the fact that every train I caught had a Dash-9 on the point that night, this one is probably the best of them. CN C44-9W 2204 leads tonight.
CP uses DPU all the time on potash trains (except for 654), however in winter it's used on the Intermodals as well. With CN picking up DPU for manifests, hopefully this practise won't be limited to CP any longer (CN runs 7 IMS's through town vs. 1 on CP).

CN 346 and a number of other 300 series manifests have been running with DPU lately, just like CP with their potash trains. I'm not 100% sure this is 346 though, since that train showed up later, so perhaps this is 304?
Either way a very impressive consist. Not sure if this is better then a...
