    UP to discontinue cab signals.

It's the other way around. Cab signals only indicate the condition of the block you are in. PTC displays 5 miles ahead on screen, but "sees" the sixth mile ahead. You can see routes, slow track and work zones and PTC protects those items. There's no reason cab signals like UP's CCS...

    UP to discontinue cab signals.

On June 1st UP will retire cab signals over most of the UP system that are now equipped. Both Coded Cab Signals and the exCNW Automatic Train Control will be retired. No longer will equipped leaders be required, so foriegn power will now be allowed to lead over those lines that had cab signals.

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

Yes, it's possible to give and release track warrants via the PTC screens.

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

UP just recently changed some of the train make up instructions. Manifest trains over 12000 ft and weighing over 14000 tons have to have a DPU on the rear end as well as a DPU mid-train. Those big manifests get torn apart fairly regularly. They think putting one on the rear will help. I have...

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

I think the interesting building is Fremont's waste water facility.

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

High Threat Urban Areas extend out 10 miles from the city limits of the urban area. Within this zone certain key trains, those with highly flammable commodities - ethanol or crude oil for example, are limited to 40 mph.

G'day from Australia... and a question

Only hazmat loads, and empties, require to be placarded. Loads like corn syrup, corn or bean oil, etc, don't require placards. Many, many years ago there were empty residue placards for empty hazmat cars. Now a tank car assigned to hazmat display the required placard for the load it carries...

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

On the Columbus Sub, one of the tracks is expected to be opened on 03/25. The other track by 03/27.

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

BNSF is also detouring over the UP across Iowa to Council Bluffs/Omaha. Friday, both east and west Zephyrs are on the UP crew line up. The FRA has issued an emergency waiver that allows engines that are not equipped with cab signals to lead in cab signal territory. That allows foreign line...

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

Tonight, BNSF is detouring a couple of trains eastward over the UP out of Omaha/CB.

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

UP had extensive damage on the Columbus Sub. Also water over the tracks/ washouts on the Omaha and Blair Subs. Boone Sub around Logan also was underwater. Everything came to a stop late Wednesday. Friday saw the tracks opened at Logan so a few trains have been running to/from Council Bluffs...

    Where is the Omaha Posse?

Pleasant Prairie was shut down last year. The coal in those cars would be going to the Oak Creek plant now.

Don't trust your life to a mechanical signal

You should probably consult the state DOT you live in for the proper meaning. Generally, the railroad crossbuck sign equals a yield sign. If flashing red lights are operating it equals a stop sign. Stop and you may proceed if safe to do so. The lowered gate is absolute. Many crossings in...

What Commodities Could Return To The Rails?

Unfortunately, most class one carriers, especially as Precision Scheduled Railroading takes hold, are better at shedding business than finding new business. They only want business that fits their business model. The focus is on operating ratios and stock prices-returning money to shareholders...

    Some Old Slides Rerun

UP had, and still does have cab signals, but only over certain lines. On lines not equipped for cab signal operation, the cab signals wouldn't be operational. Unless a unit was equipped for both directions, and most aren't, they won't work running backwards. All UP road units purchased since...

I applied for work on a train crew with a railroad without NARS. What are my odds of getting an interview?

It shouldn't be a problem. You'll still go through the training provided by whatever railroad hires you. Other than short line/regionals, and maybe BNSF who seems to be in partnership with them, most don't give much credence to the various railroad schools or programs. The class ones want to...

    How old is too old

Once upon a time major railroads had age limits, 35 for no experience-45 with experience, but no more. I know a couple guys who were hired in their upper 50s/lower 60s.

    Blair Ethanol.

The covered coal type hoppers haul a by-product from the ethanol process used for animal feed. They don't haul grain into the plant.

    BNSF in the Ottumwa Sub

Ottumwa is still very much in use. My wife and I got on, and a week later got off, the California Zephyr there last July. Jeff

UP bridge out at Clinton, IA?

Every now and then the swing bridge breaks down. When it happens to break in the open position, things come to a stop until it's fixed. It is planned to be replaced but there is no current date specified. It's been talked about for quite a few years, but the only recent action taken was the...
