Wrong. It is a SD38, not a SD40-2. The McCloud River never did own any SD40-2s. The McCloud replaced its first generation diesels (8 Baldwins of various models) with 3 new SD38's in May 1969. They added a single SD38-2 in 1974. The SD38-2 went to UP in 1997, and the other...
Russian- Simple answer to your question. Money. What money the railroad has gets spent on other things. Painting passenger cars is not something that ranks high enough on the priority list to get funded.
The dinner train is painted, but unless a new owner takes over the VIA cars never will...

For what it's worth the Lewis & Clark no longer operates that railroad...the LINC died when the Temple family outbid them for the operating contract for the line. I'm not sure if the Temple family has a new name for the railroad or not...it might be run as a division of...

Malen can work for the Shasta Sunset without affecting his retirement. As a result he has run just about every passenger train that has run since his retirement...in his words, just enough to pay the premium on his health insurance.

Forgot one thing...what is really amazing is to look at the 1955 footage of the Lake Britton bridge and surroundings on the Pentrex tape to see how much vegetation there has changed in 48 years.
Nope...after a decade of inactivity the #102 was re-activated in 1995 for the tourist business, and it was painted red with white trim at that time.
The red paint is starting to fade...that's what you see here.
