Thanks for the comment.  This is a photo that is over 12 years old.  I think it was shot on Fuji Provia 100.  A copy of the image was purchased by Washington Companies and is now an etched glass image in one of the MRL business cars.
I think I would rather see the train in either the top or bottom of this photo. Maybe the lighting conditions wouldn't allow it, but the train in the lower portion and the mountains above with even a little piece of sky would still give the great depth.
I really like the intent of this photography and the compostion is also good. I might move the flowers a little more to the right and use them and the tree on the left to better frame the train. However, with the available light, I'd rather see the train in focus and nice and sharp, instead of...
Steve and Ross, you are close on the location, but it is probably closer to 3 miles or more out of Ranchester. The crew can see the second block signal west of Ranchester right now as they round this curve. From the height of this shot, I am guessing you shot it from the ranch road right near...
Of the 14 shots posted so far, this one really stands out. Beautiful composition and it wouldn't matter what continent the train was on either. 100 more photos could go in this section and I think this one will still stand out.

Good question. The train was stopped on the siding waiting to meet another train. Thus, the window of opportunity with the...
Trainman Chad Jolley rides the rear of the Polson Local to the west switch at Dixon, MT. Due to bridge work, a second crew took the Polson Local back to Missoula the long way via Paradise.
This one definitely jumps out in the Sunset Gallery. I'd go with a 10 if there was a bit more track at the bottom of the shot and it was just a little sharper.
I like the composition, but it seems to be missing some "punch" that would rank it higher for me. I can't tell you what that punch is though - maybe the snowflakes shining in the headlights?
I really like the composition and where you captured the train on the tracks. We have just enough to see the train can move forward. Too often, the composition is cropped too close to the edge. The lighting is great. Was it closing in on you or just opening up? The matched units and train...
Ross, I would probably cut off the hills too if I didn't make an effort to keep them there. Whenever I take photographs, I try to compose the shot and then check all the corners to make sure everything is there or if something is there that shouldn't be!
