The well guarded summitt

The well guarded summitt

From the mound of great sand along RTE 138, a BNSF intermodel glides past the armed soilders and attack dogs at Cajon Summitt. More photos at www.tailsnrails.com
Cajon Pass is located at the top of a 4,000 mountain outside the heavily populated LA basin. Cajon is a 3 track (2 BNSF ex-ATSF, 1 UP ex-SP)main running on a 2.2-3% grade, and in the 90's was the seen of some pretty nasty run aways, mostly ending up in backyards at the bottom. Some, not all trains will stop at the top for brake and equipment checks. The fence, lights, and guards were put in place to keep people from messing with trains and tracks there. Very few people can get closer to the summit than this, which with the awesome view, is okay with me.
