Steam and other vapours

As a modernist at heart, I'm not really that fussed on steam. But the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Cooma line in 1989, running south of the national capital of Canberra, was enough to get me trackside.

Here we see a ghostly 1210 (a 100 year old product of Beyer Peacock) leading 5910 (a 1950s Baldwin import) on the excursion train near the tiny town of Michelago. I was lucky with the shot, as the combination of fog and a downgrade allowed the train to appear almost out of nowhere.

My other memory of this shot was the bemused looks of other railfans as they saw my chosen location, as they sped past in search of some sun. I think I got the last laugh though!
