Today when GE ES44DCs have taken over CN, while SD40-2s & SD50Fs are being retired in droves, its hard to believe that earlier this year CN was still leasing 50 Alstom SD40-3s, all ex-CN SD40s. Power policy sure changed quickly!

Back in 2004 I managed to catch three trio sets working the mainline & PNL. GCFX 6075-6051-6048 lead 453?, ex-CN SD40s 5169, 5195 & 5206 respectively. Plenty of duo sets powered this train as well.

I havent seen any trio sets since, mostly because CN began re-numbering/patching them into the WC 6900 series. This largely restricted the units to WC territory and made them non-leaders in Canada, hence I havent even seen a duo since.

Note the Lettelier sub lead in the foreground. CN pulled up the switch (forming a ~150ft spur in the process), making the branchline accessible through Fort Rouge yard only.
If you ever find one of those "Take An Alberta Break" cars that says Pincher Creek, let me know.

Thanks and great pic.
