The EJ&E had the most modern caboose fleet in my young (7-10 year old) opinion. I was raised in West Chicago, and the EJ&E had connections with the C&NW and CGW, so I had occasion to visit one of EJ&E's cabooses one day. The CB&Q had a minor connection with the C&NW, and they had a rickity old wooden caboose, heated with coal. The C&NW had modern steel bay window cabooses, but still heated with coal. The EJ&E had this modern caboose, powered and heated with propane, and included a refrigerator, I suppose also propane powered. As a youngster, I was impressed by the new and modern stuff.
