Tunnel 19

Tunnel 19

On the old D&rgW Moffat Route, a BNSF manifest exercising trackage rights grinds up the 2% grade, through Tunnel 19, just west of Crescent, CO. Its headlights are illuminating the tunnel interior, and the rails are afire with light. One of my most favorite shots!
A most excellent shot. A view of a tunnel much different than most. I love the way the interior of the tunnel is illuminated so that you can see all the detail of the boring, as well as how the surrounding hillside is properly exposed, framing the image so well. Very nicely done.

I agree, this shot turned out great. It seems like one of those times when you aren't really expecting much out of the photo as its dark out and tough to do much, then you review the shot and realize that you got something really cool. Also its not an easy place to get to which gets you even more credit. Really a very unique shot, don't trains just sound awesome working upgrade through those tunnels!! You'll be getting my vote....

Thanks guys!
Like it was said, I wasn't expecting much from the shot, as it was nearly dark, but the tunnel was just right a few aspects: Long, straight, and curved. What's that, you say? Tunnel 19 is straight for several hundred feet, and tightly curved at the other end. The tight curve shuts out all other light, and the long tangent, and concrete lining work so well together. This shot is perfect for late evening, though I haven't tried it in early morning with an eastbound. The shot wouldn't be so dramatic.
The trains sound INCREDIBLE working upgrade, witness my short video from the last trip, raining like crazy to boot:
