Waiting for the cross at Kempsey

On the north coast of New South Wales (Australia), Interail's Brisbane to Melbourne freight 3BM7 stands at Kempsey at 11.16pm on Tuesday 17 March 2009, waiting to cross Sydney-Brisbane XPT passenger train NT31. Powered by cab units CLP10+CLF4+CLP12, the 1710 tonne train included fifty container wagons and was 1092.4 metres long.
Very cool! Australian cab units are really interesting beasts. These look like a cross between a GM F unit and an F45. Are these units turbocharged? Do they have 645 prime movers inside? Thanks for posting!

The CLP and CLF classes (that's CLP for passenger and CLF for freight) are powered by the EMD 16-645E3C diesel engine, the turbocharged V-16 645. They were built for the Commonwealth Railways between 1970 and 1972 by Clyde Engineering and given the AT26C model designation.

I might be wrong, but I understand the lead loco here, CLP10, was the last locomotive built with the classic EMD rounded nose, delivered on 16 June 1972 as CL17.

It was rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen Australia with the AT26HC-2M model designation (head-end power and dash 2 modular electronics) in 1993, re-numbered CLP10 and named "Mirning" after an indigenous Australian tribe from coastal South Australia.

Unfortunately QRNational/Interail's 10 CLP and CLF locos about to be bumped from the interstate freight traffic between Brisbane and Melbourne by new leased LDP class GT46C-ACe locos (powered by the 16-710G3C-ES2). It looks like the LDPs could take over, at least as lead units, some time next week (early April 2009).
