I saw the exact same thing when going through Berkley, CA (yes that Academic Berkly) on AMTRAK. Wasn't quick enough to grab a photo though. The BART train through Berkley was a completely different story - I was surrounded by fellow college students who were knitting scarves while on board!

This is really a great photo. It gives a great impression of being in the middle of no where, with nothing going on, especially with the person sleeping on the platform..
