Imitation....

In 1985 the Connecticut Valley Railroad Museum (now the Railroad Museum of New England) acquired former Amtrak E-9 417 mainly as a "trial horse" to test our restoration skills (cosmetic only). The 417 is origionally U.P. 912A, the third to last E-unit built, so we were aware of it's historical significance but as we are a New England focused group, it was decided to restore the 417/912A as NYC 4096, a unit which never existed. The NYC had E-7's and E-8's, and the last E-8 was the 4095, so 4096 was chosen as the "logical choice" for a number. The 4096 was eventually acquired by a private individual and is now on display at the Danbury, (CT.) Railroad museum. Sadly, after 22 years out in the weather, it no longer looks like it did this day in October, 1986, when it was rolled up to the Centerbrook meadows for portraits.
