Chicago Burlington and Quincy F3 116D, built October 1947 (c/n 4405), seen here inside the Clyde Diesel House, Clyde Illinois, March 26, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was traded as credit for a U28B in December 1966. It was most likely scrapped, but I do not know where. There is an obvious ding on the engineer's side, probably a story to go with that.
A question came up regarding my permission to photograph inside the shops, and I recall wandering into the shops on a few occasions. I never actually had permission to shoot photographs in the shops, but that didn't stop me.
There were a couple of ways to charm your way into the shops, none of which would work today. Once I learned a particular shop supervisor had a fondness for asparagus, and it happened to grow wild in my neighborhood, so I would pick some and offer it as incentive to grant permission. Sometimes, when I didn't know anyone in the shop, I would walk up to a low level employee and ask who to see to get permission. I would be directed to the shop supervisor in the enclosed office, and I would head in the general direction of the office until out of sight of the low level employee. I would then snap a couple of photos on the way. If I was caught, I would say I was on my way to get permission. Sometimes I would arrive during a shift change, and slip in while everyone was in the locker room. I never worked for the Q, but had many trips both as a paying customer and as an extra man in the cab. I was 16 and these were simpler times.
You might think this is creative framing, with the flanged wheels appearing out of focus in the lower left. Truth be told, I was using the next set of wheels as my tripod, and I could not move the wheels in front out of frame. Below are a couple of links to other photos I shot in the diesel house and adjoining roundhouse.
