BL log truck incident 5/2

A Roulette man was in serious condition after the log truck he was operating was hit by a train Monday afternoon along Route 155, just south of Port Allegany, near the Postlewait Chipping Co. According to State Police, the loaded log truck operated by Daniel E. Skinner, 27, turned off Route 155 and onto the entrance Postlewait Log Yard and up a short grade to the Norfolk Southern Railroad track crossing. The truck moved onto the railroad tracks, and was then hit by a southbound pair of locomotives operated by William T. Nuttle, 34, of East Aurora, N.Y. Authorities said Nuttle indicated he never saw Skinner's truck cross the tracks in front of him until the accident. Police said the train was traveling at 38 mph when the crash occurred.

When hit by the train, the truck was pushed down the tracks about 200 feet south of the crossing, police said. Logs and pieces of the engine and chassis could be seen scattered for along the east side of the tracks. The cab of the truck was separated from the chassis by the impact of the crash., ending up on the west side of the railway. The two coupled engines were apparently southbound to Keating Summit to assist a train at the long grade there. Calls seeking comment to a Norfolk Southern office in Emporium were not successful. An emergency medical helicopter was called to the scene, but diverted to Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport because of bad weather. Skinner was taken there by Port Area Ambulance and was then flown by helicopter to Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Clinic in Sayre, where he was listed in serious condition with severe injuries Monday night, according to a nursing supervisor there. Train traffic on the line was delayed for about six hours.
