Austin-Western Whitcomb

Austin-Western Whitcomb

Austin-Western Whitcomb, Aurora, Illinois, June 18, 1965. Whitcomb locomotives were manufactured in Rochelle, IL (with 92% stock owned by Balwin Locomotive Works from a 1931 reorganization), until 1952. Austin-Western was best known in railroad circles for their 30 cubic yard air dump gondola cars. This locomotive design originated with a WWII US Navy design, approximately 360 HP, two traction motors inboard, with the outboard axles driven by side rods.
