Snowy North Pole
Some snowy scenes from the Holiday Trains on the Royal Gorge Scenic Railroad.
We didn’t really get a ton of snow from this last storm - maybe a few inches at best.
And though the high today was only 32, a fair bit melted off with the sun. Still, it was quite pretty even so.

Norfolk Southern Corporation is gifting the historic Marco Polo rail car, a car President Franklin D. Roosevelt used while in office, to the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia.

The Pullman Company built the Marco Polo in 1927 as part of a small fleet of cars named for world explorers, reserving them for VIPs who chartered their own railcar. Roosevelt traveled in the car when he was governor of New York and later as president, using it on trips to and from Warm Springs, Georgia.

The car is scheduled to arrive at the museum at 11 a.m. on Nov. 14, and a brief unveiling ceremony will follow.

The museum plans to display the car on its 35-acre campus alongside the Superb, a Pullman car used by President Warren G. Harding.

The Restoration of 1309

Help us reach our goal of $100,000 and bring steam back to Cumberland!

Constructed in 1949 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Chesapeake & Ohio Railway steam locomotive no. 1309 was built to handle the railroad’s heaviest coal trains throughout Kentucky and West Virginia until it was retired in 1956.

64 years later, no. 1309 is undergoing a meticulous and extensive restoration to service. When complete, the locomotive will become an outstanding tourist attraction operating trains between Cumberland and Frostburg, Maryland, and the largest operating steam locomotive of its type in the world.

This monumental effort has been largely funded by generous grants and private donations which have helped us raise over a million dollars to date.

Your help is needed to complete the 1309 and return the stirring sights and sounds of a...

C&O 1309 Restoration Work Finally Nears Completion

Chesapeake & Ohio 2-6-6-2 No. 1309 is undergoing restoration the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR), and has been for some time. Numerous setbacks have befallen the restoration work.

Kevin Keefe has posted an update over on the Classic Trains website:

"As anyone who follows steam restorations knows, bringing a big engine back to life is a marathon, never a sprint. Union Pacific and its Big Boy notwithstanding, nearly every organization that has gotten into the game quickly discovered it would be a long and sometimes agonizing haul.

I have firsthand knowledge. When I began scraping my knuckles on a Berkshire in college, it was 1971. That engine, Pere Marquette 1225, wouldn’t turn a wheel under its own power for another 15 years. "

I present to you the magnificent SP #4449 steam locomotive on a secret BNSF excursion run!

From April 9th through April 12th the #4449 made four round trips on the Fallbridge subdivision from Vancouver to Wishram and back once each day. This was done for the filming of an upcoming IMAX movie called "Train Time" by The Stephen Low Company.

All the rolling stock on this train is BNSF passenger cars with no passengers except #4449 crew and BNSF crew, it was simply a train to be filmed. Film crews chased the train for all four days with a giant IMAX camera and on the fourth and final day with a helicopter which can actually be seen near the end of this video. This footage was filmed on April 10th as well as April 12th with some locations the same between both days.

All footage is in...

Purgatory Resort’s insurance company has filed a lawsuit against the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for costs associated with the 416 Fire.

According to the lawsuit, Purgatory Resort sustained financial losses after it was forced to shut down as the 416 Fire burned nearby for nearly two months, consuming 54,000 acres mostly in the adjacent Hermosa Creek watershed.

“Purgatory’s property and business were damaged as a result of the 416 Fire, including but not limited to, smoke and ash flows, loss of business revenue, diminished property values and economic harm,” the lawsuit says.

American Heritage says it will work to find a new owner for Mount Rainier Scenic

“It is with great regret and sorrow we make this announcement today, as everyone associated with this historic railroad has worked extremely hard to make it prosper and delight guests from all over the world,” said John Harper, general manager of American Heritage Railways, Inc. “With still many financial and operational unknowns to work through, AHR will announce further details in the near future regarding its plans for the facility, including finding a new owner and overseeing the divestiture of its famed locomotives and other important infrastructure assets. NRM Press Release 5/19/20

Letter from the CEO
Updated: May 19, 2020
Dear Friends,

Last Friday afternoon, Brown County, Wisconsin rescinded the “Safer at Home” order, allowing businesses to reopen. This does not mean that COVID-19 has been eradicated; it is still spreading within our community. As a community organization, we have been considering the desire so many have to leave their home and resume the activities they enjoy against the current status of the pandemic in this area. It is important to me that all of our visitors remain safe and healthy, and in anticipation of reopening, we have been preparing the Museum for your visit over the last few weeks.

We will open to the public on Thursday, May 21 at 9:00 a.m. In appreciation of the ongoing work of our healthcare workers, police, firefighters, City of Green Bay, Village of Ashwaubenon, and Brown County employees, we will give them free admission to...

NP 0-6-0 924 Steam Tested at the Northwest Railway Museum

May 18, 2020 represents an important milestone for the 924: it returned to steam and operated under its own power in testing on the shop track. An inspection conducted by the Federal Railroad Administration observed that the boiler safety valves opened and closed at appropriate pressure levels, and the steam-powered air pump was able to deliver the required air flow. During the visit, Museum staff also demonstrated successful operation of both Ohio injectors, and the hydro-static lubricator, all of which were rebuilt by Backshop Enterprises. And an additional day under steam gave collections care specialists - steam specialists, really - an opportunity to perform additional testing and troubleshooting. Steven B., Josh K., Scott, and Gary performed most of the effort required to boil the boiler water, but dozens of additional volunteers and staff contributed efforts that allowed this to happen...

Ffestiniog Railway at Blaenau, Wales UK

I was introduced to this cartoonie looking critter and came away completely impressed! This is Ffestiniog Railway 2' gauge Double Fairlie articulated 0-4-4-0 David Lloyd George (built 1992 at Boston Lodge). I only rode because of a scheduling mistake that resulted from my own miscalculation.

I had heading into Wales specifically to see the South African baby Bayer Garratts that operate on the Welsh Highlands Railway. I showed up at the Welsh Highlands depot in Caernarfon ready to ride. I walked in and asked when the train would show up and was told there wasn't going to be one. They didn't run on Mondays. Calendars in the UK start on Monday, not Sunday like those that I'm accustomed. (Note: I did know this.) I had glanced at their operating calendar the day before while I was visiting the Severn Valley Railway, saw the color coding and assumed Monday was actually Sunday. Opps.

This conversation occurred at approximately 9:20 am. I knew that the cartoonie Ffestiniog train departed...

5/15/20 - As we get things ready to reopen, we’ve had a lot of work getting the train switched into a serviceable configuration for social distancing, and moving cars in and out of the shop. Yesterday, the train got a much-needed bath. And today, for the third time in a week, we had the train out and moving. Today, it was a run up to Parkdale to turn two cars and a locomotive, along with some crew training and re familiarization after the heavy winter work the fleet has gotten. That gave us an opportunity to work out the locomotives as well - most everything was placed in storage when the quarantine started. It also gave us the chance to take Grande Vista, the dome car we bought from Oregon last year, out past Cañon City for the first time. Naturally, everything and everyone performed flawlessly, and made it back safe and sound. We’ve done a ton of work over the off season making an already safe train safer, stronger, and ready for many years of service to come. I am proud to work...
