Hi,

To the previous part of the series:
South of the Alps - 10: Steam along Lago Iseo II (50 p.)

April 28 2019

A special train for pilgrims to Lourdes at Verona Porta Nuova station Sunday morning.

Frecciarossa 1000 9798 Venice - Milan met slightly delayed Frecciarossa 9705 Milan - Venice.

We reached Brescia at 9:30 a.m., just as R 2059 Milano - Verona arrived on platform 1.

I wanted to stroll through Brescia city centre after my excursion to Lago Iseo in September - aided by city transport: since 2013, the 17th largest city in Italy (however, third...
Union Pacific 1989 on the Rock and Rail Parkdale to Colorado Springs rock train

Before the activity at the Royal Gorge Route reached fever pitch, I took a moment to watch our sister railroad at work. Union Pacific 1989, the Rio Grande heritage unit, has persisted on the Parkdale to Colorado Springs rock train run by Rock and Rail, whom we share ownership of the railroad with. This makes 5-6 weeks already, which I haven’t ever seen before. And despite it all, I haven’t really taken any photos of it beyond the snow shots I took in April, and a few notable misses. But I did head out today, and managed two photo angles - one ok (I need a 10’ ladder and an earlier train to get the light better) and one that I was reasonably pleased with.

5/15/20 - As we get things ready to reopen, we’ve had a lot of work getting the train switched into a serviceable configuration for social distancing, and moving cars in and out of the shop. Yesterday, the train got a much-needed bath. And today, for the third time in a week, we had the train out and moving. Today, it was a run up to Parkdale to turn two cars and a locomotive, along with some crew training and re familiarization after the heavy winter work the fleet has gotten. That gave us an opportunity to work out the locomotives as well - most everything was placed in storage when the quarantine started. It also gave us the chance to take Grande Vista, the dome car we bought from Oregon last year, out past Cañon City for the first time. Naturally, everything and everyone performed flawlessly, and made it back safe and sound. We’ve done a ton of work over the off season making an already safe train safer, stronger, and ready for many years of service to come. I am proud to work...
